My Story — Ms.P Braids and Fashion

 

The Bible says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” I can truly say that I am a living testimony.

 

My story started when I was a little girl watching my mother style her clients’ hair. I saw the smiles on their faces and heard the gratitude they gave her when she finished. Even then, I knew what I wanted to do. I dreamed of becoming a hairstylist and one day seeing my work featured in hair magazines.

 

At the same time, another passion was quietly being planted in me—fashion and thrifting. My mother and her close friend Brenda Webb would take my sisters Lisa and Felicia and me to yard sales almost every Saturday during the spring and summer. Back then, I didn’t realize they were teaching me something that would become a major part of my future: how to see treasure in something someone else had overlooked.

 

My journey wasn't easy. Because of learning disabilities that went undiagnosed, I struggled tremendously in school. I repeated grades and eventually found myself 15 years old in the sixth grade. Discouraged and frustrated, I dropped out.

 

At 15, my life changed again when I became a young mother. With very little education and limited income, I had to learn how to make something out of what I had. I depended on assistance while trying to build a life for myself and my children. Garage sales and thrift stores became a way for me to find clothes, household items and beautiful things I otherwise couldn't afford.

 

But God wasn't finished with my story.

 

At 19, I gave my life to God, and my life began moving in a different direction. I went on to graduate from Dallas Barber College, earn my high school diploma, teach other hairstylists, and graduate from Collin College in May 2015.

 

The little girl who once dreamed about being in a hair magazine eventually saw that dream come true. My work was featured twice in Sophisticate's Black Hair magazine.

 

I spent decades doing what I loved—braiding and styling hair—and even returned to Dallas Barber College as an instructor. I became known for my speed, precision and attention to detail, often completing box braids, regardless of length or size, in under three hours.

 

Eventually, my creativity grew beyond hair. I created my Blessed Grow By Ms.P hair product line and built Ms.P Braids And Fashion Boutique.

 

Over three consecutive years, I opened three salon/boutiques. But I started noticing something: many boutiques were purchasing similar merchandise from the same vendors. Meanwhile, whenever I wore unique pieces I had found while thrifting, customers complimented me and sometimes wanted to buy the clothes right off my body!

 

So I started bringing thrifted treasures into my salon.

 

And they began selling faster than many of my vendor pieces.

 

That little girl who spent Saturdays going to yard sales had found her passion again.

 

Then life changed once more.

 

My back went out, and physically I could no longer keep doing everything the way I had been. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to close my salon/boutiques and begin working from home, doing hair on my own schedule while continuing to thrift, create and sell unique fashion.

 

What looked like an ending became another beginning.

 

Today, Ms.P Braids And Fashion represents every part of my journey—faith, hair, fashion, creativity, thrifting and transformation. I love taking something overlooked and turning it into something beautiful and one-of-a-kind, just as God has done throughout my own life.

 

I went from a 15-year-old school dropout and young mother wondering what my future would look like to becoming a college graduate, professional hairstylist, instructor, published hair artist, entrepreneur, boutique owner, product creator and fashion designer.

 

And I'm still creating.

 

My story reminds me that where you start does not have to determine where you finish.

 

With faith, determination, good people around you and the courage to keep going, your circumstances don't have to cancel your dreams.

 

My motto says it best:

 

“The Hands Touch It, the Eyes See It, and the Soul Feels It.”

 

I am Ms.P, and this is more than hair and fashion.
